Warm place to be at. Apart from being transported back to Edo, the locals in the area are more than happy to engage you.

A fascinating throwback to a bygone era of Japan. Lots of local foods and interesting shops to buy souvenirs from, especially traditional Japanese clothing and woodwork!

End of our Nakasendo walk, lovely place with excellent steamed buns from this little shop. It could really use a more frequent bus up to the station though. I'd recommend taking a taxi, there are prices at the bus stop that seemed very reasonable.

Stunning walk from Magome to Tsumago.

Amazing post town experience. I stepped back in time as I entered the town. We hiked from Magome Juku through the forest and crossing highways. Wonderful experience.

Tsumago-juku is a small town in the mountains famous for the start or ending point of the Magome-Tsumago hiking trail. The old trading post and old part of town is actually very interesting to see and stands out more original than other old neighborhoods like the ones in Kyoto og Kanazawa. The Tourist Information does not speak anything but Japanese but is very friendly and willing to help. With signs and paintings at maps etc. it works out. There is a bus connecting the two cities and if you are back packing you can either have your gear sent to the other town or store them in lockers at the bus station if you plan to return. I parked the car at Tsumago, took the bus to Magome and hiked back the 7.8 kilometers. Most of town is accessible with wheelchair but the oldest small street has loose grovel and is not accessible. But it is viewable.

Tsumago (妻籠) was a post town on the Nakasendo route between Kyoto and Edo. It is known today as one of the best preserved post towns in Japan. The town and its residents go to great lengths to recreate the ambience of the Edo Period.The town has been beautifully restored with a broad stone walkway lined with carefully tended foliage.

Beautiful post town, can easily spend half a day here admiring the sceneries and taking in the street foods on offer.

Visually stunning, a real treat after the walk from Magome. Don't expect to eat here though.

A pretty and off-the-beaten-path experience. If you are sick of big cities, then take a trip out to the Kiso valley to see the old post towns.I took a bus to Magomejuku and walked the Nakasendo trail through Tsumagojuku to Nagiso station. The trail was wonderful, and this was a nice stop along the way.

Beautiful place!!!! You should visit this place before sunset then you can enjoy an amazing light through all the way. Because it was in march I could see it's amazing Hina Matsuri exhibition. Really impressive. There's a Oyaki shop where if you eat there the owner gives you some pickles and tea for free. I could have a peaceful walk with gorgeous views.

Beautiful old type Japanese village. Starting at around noon number of tourists increase, so I suggest to arrive before 11 o'clock.

Very nice and easy walk between Magome and Tsumago. Tsumago is a very traditional Japanese town very well maintained. Cute and small you can walk everywhere. Definitely a must stop if you are exploring the Kiso valley (Magome and Narai also).

Great little mountain postal town, famous for being part of the old Nakasendo trail from the Edo period. Lots of cute shops and old style buildings. There are also ryokans (Japanese inns) available for overnight stays.

Nice town. If you go there you should take the nakasendo trail to get there, but choose a day with good weather. Many kids can do this trail too.

Very pretty town and definitely a highlight of the Nakasendo trail - if you do a 5-day hike.

This is one of my most favorite old towns in Japan! We were on Roadtrip and stopped by many places. It was in June rainy season. However we got very very lucky with no rain at all. Weather was gorgeous, not hot not cold. It was perfect! We got there around 5:30pm. It was no one there. The town was close around 4pm. It was even better that no tourists at all. That made it like we were back in an old time. Very charming.

Lovely old preserved traditional town with little craft shops. Very touristy and lots of people but still worth it. Recommend this as part of walking between Magome and Tsumago.

Nice old little town just outside of Nagoya. Hiked there from Magome on the Nakasendo trail and is about 7k.

A beautiful village showing to old post stations of the nakasendo. It is so unique and full of history.There are also small shops and restaurants were you can rest and buy traditional japanese handcraft.

Very interesting area, everything from the landscape to the building design is very unique. It's not your typical walk into town type of day when you come through here as a tourist.Take in the beautiful landscape and the surrounding area you are in, really make a day of it.

Awesome preserved city from Edo period, however alot of local cars parking inside the city, made the small town aint that “Edo” enough, 1-2 hour max you can finish venturing this place.

Interesting place to visit with beautiful and well-preserved houses built during Edo Period. Dainty shops that sells desserts, snacks, souvenirs etc. The vegetable bun and soft serves were delicious

A beautiful, ancient post town on the Old Nakasendo Trail. This would be end point for most of those hiking in from Magome-juku. Some of the houses here are over 300 years old and perfectly preserved. The cobbled road is flanked by shops on both side, mostly selling trinkets with some offering food and shelter for the weary. There is a stretch whereby phone lines and cables are not seen above ground so as to preserve the image of the old town. Tip for travellers - the bus to Nagiso JR station can get very very crowded during peak period. You might want to hire a cab instead...collectively for 4 adults sharing one cab, the cost isn't that greater when combined and you'll travel in comfort and in less time too.

Not that old.. U can experience such villages all over the country without the tourists and shops. 5 stars for Hillbillys caffe!!

Very unique post station on the Nakasendo. A bit quiet in winter but worth visiting if you are in this part of the county. It's possible and recommended to walk here from Nagiso Station, but it will take some time. It's ideal to pack bags lightly in this area.

Beautifully preserved Edo period post town. Try to get there super early (which we could because we had stayed the night before in a nearby Inn) before 9am at least because that's when all the tourist buses come pouring in and it's impossible to take a good photo without a sea of people ruining it. Worth a visit

Even constant moderate rain didn't spoil the experience of walking from Magome to Tsumago on the Nakasendo track. It only took 2 hours and I'm not a fast walker. And do try the oyaki at Dochuoyaki in Magome! There are food/tea/souvenir shops at both ends.

Feels more authentic than other historical towns. Less crowded with tourists. Well worth the visit.

An interesting small old town , however the hike from Magome was utterly boring.

This is a truly recommended place not only for Japanese and also for visitors from abroad. As known Kiso valley, the old historical atmosphere of the Edo era, you may be able to experience only here or in Magome. And also, you can try and taste real local dishes of southern Nagano. But because of the location, it takes hours totally if you come from Nagoya. Including Magome, whole day trip is recommended.

We arrived here through the nakasendo way from Magome and we really enjoyed this little town.
